        "content": "<p>RP seeks help to delay FATF sanctions<\/p>\n<p>MANILA: President Gloria Arroyo has asked the United States for<br>\nhelp in holding off looming international sanctions against the<br>\nPhilippines for failure to bolster its anti money-laundering<br>\nregime, her spokesman said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\"The government has sought the assistance of the United States<br>\nto exercise its moral suasion on FATF members to hold adverse<br>\nactions directed against the Philippines,\" presidential spokesman<br>\nIgnacio Bunye said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The Paris-based Financial Action Task Force (FATF) decided<br>\nFriday to recommend additional counter-measures against the<br>\nPhilippines starting March 15 due to Manila's perceived failure<br>\nto plug loopholes in its anti money-laundering law.<\/p>\n<p>Congress last week beat a Feb. 12 deadline to pass amendments,<br>\nbut the FATF, set up by the Organization for Economic Cooperation<br>\nand Development, said the new measures failed to address<br>\n\"previously identified deficiencies\" in the law.<\/p>\n<p>\"We are now suffering the effects of the anticipated<br>\nimposition of FATF sanctions.
