RP military probes ex-rebels' claim<\/p>\n
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (DPA): The military opened
\nyesterday a formal inquiry into accusations of maltreatment by
\nformer rebels undergoing training for integration into the
\nPhilippine armed forces.<\/p>\n
The inquiry was triggered by the walkout of more than 200
\nformer Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) rebels from their
\ntraining camps June 9 after complaining that their trainers
\npunched and kicked them during drills.<\/p>\n
Brig. Gen. Diomedio Villanueva, an army division commander who
\nheads the investigation, pledged to the MNLF trainees that there
\nwill be no whitewash in the probe and that trainers proven to be
\nguilty will be punished.<\/p>\n
Last year, a group of former MNLF rebels also stomped out of
\nmilitary camps in nearby Cotabato and Sulu provinces after
\naccusing Christian military trainers of maltreatment and
\nindiscrimination. At least two drill sergeants were dismissed
\nafter they were found guilty of physical abuse.<\/p>",
