RP military condemns ambush<\/p>\n
MANILA (DPA): The Philippines' military chief condemned on
\nWednesday an ambush by communist rebels that killed 13 soldiers
\nwho were returning from a medical mission in a northern province.<\/p>\n
Armed Forces Chief of Staff General Angelo Reyes vowed to hunt
\ndown the New People's Army (NPA) guerrillas behind the attack on
\nthe military convoy on Tuesday afternoon in the town of Linomot
\nJones, Isabela province, 300 kilometers north of Manila.<\/p>\n
Among the slain army soldiers were Col. Josefino Manayao,
\ncommander of the 502nd infantry brigade that was conducting a
\nhumanitarian mission, and Second Lieutenant Wilfredo Estanislao
\nof the 54th infantry battalion.<\/p>\n
Reyes said the ambush was "obviously in response" to a
\ndirective by communist leaders living in self-imposed exile in
\nthe Netherlands for the NPA "to step up their terroristic
\nactivities" at a time when the military was busy fighting Muslim
\nresistance in the south.<\/p>",
