RP continues Marcos suits<\/p>\n
MANILA (AP): The government of President Joseph Estrada will
\nnot settle the numerous criminal and civil suits against the
\nfamily of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos for less than 75
\npercent of his US$540 million Swiss bank deposits, a senior
\nofficial said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Presidential Executive Secretary Ronaldo Zamora said the
\nMarcos family has expressed privately that "they are amicable to
\na settlement."<\/p>\n
On Thursday, Zamora indicated that the Estrada administration
\nwas more inclined to favor an out-of-court settlement with the
\nMarcoses and their associates because years of legal battles to
\nrecover their alleged ill-gotten wealth have yielded little.<\/p>\n
The Marcos Swiss accounts have been transferred to a
\nPhilippine bank. The money is to be released to the Philippine
\ngovernment if it wins a conviction against Marcos' widow, Imelda.<\/p>",
