        "content": "<p>RP committed to AFTA<\/p>\n<p>MANILA (AFP): The Philippines' commitment to a Southeast Asian<br>\nfree trade area is \"total\" despite challenges resulting from the<br>\nregional financial crisis, the country's chief economic planner<br>\nsaid Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\"Our commitment to a single ASEAN market is total,\" Economic<br>\nPlanning Secretary Felipe Medalla said in a conference sponsored<br>\nby the foreign correspondents' club here, referring to the<br>\nAssociation of Southeast Asian Nations Free Trade Area (AFTA).<\/p>\n<p>\"We cannot bring up tariffs again just to save businesses<br>\nwhich are sinking,\" he added.<\/p>\n<p>Medalla cited the case of National Steel Corp. which was<br>\nforced to shut down late last year due to heavy debts. The<br>\ngovernment rejected the company's appeal to raise import tariffs<br>\non steel products.<\/p>\n<p>Under the AFTA scheme, ASEAN's more developed economies of<br>\nBrunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and<br>\nThailand have agreed to bring down tariffs to zero-to-five<br>\npercent on most products by 2002.<\/p>",
