RP agrees to U.S. request on airports<\/p>\n
MANILA (AFP): The Philippines on Wednesday agreed to let the
\nU.S. government use its international airports if they were
\nneeded in the transport of \"non-combat\" goods and personnel
\nfollowing a massive terrorist attack in New York and Washington.<\/p>\n
President Gloria Arroyo's spokesman Rigoberto Tiglao said the
\nU.S. embassy asked its Southeast Asian military ally on Tuesday
\nnight for \"access\" to its airports in case it was needed, and
\nthat the president readily approved the request.<\/p>\n
\"They just sent word that they might have to transfer or move
\nor (use) an airport as transit for either evacuees or civilians
\nor goods,\" Tiglao told reporters.<\/p>\n
\"The customs or airport authorities will just have to
\nfacilitate movements of goods,\" he said without elaborating.<\/p>\n
\"The U.S. government has sent word that they would want not
\naccess to our airports, but facilitation of evacuees or the
\nmovement of non-combat materials,\" he added.<\/p>\n
\"We're very willing and as the president said, she fully
\nsupports U.S. President Bush's resolve to combat terrorism and to
\ntrack down the perpetrators,\" of Tuesday's attacks, Tiglao said.<\/p>",
