Rp 56b plans for Paradiso islands<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City-owned firm PT Pembangunan Jaya Ancol plans
\nto develop an integrated recreation area called the Paradiso
\nislands, with a total investment of Rp 56 billion (US$5.6
\nmillion).<\/p>\n
The Paradiso islands will consist of four islands: Bidadari,
\nKayangan, Onrust and Kelor in the Seribu islands.<\/p>\n
City Administration Spokesman Muhayat told reporters here on
\nSaturday that the money would mainly be used to restore the
\nenvironment on the four islands, including the construction of a
\nbarrier around the islands to prevent erosion.<\/p>\n
Muhayat did not reveal whether the money would be taken from
\nthe city budget or be raised in cooperation with private
\ncompanies.<\/p>\n
PT Pembangunan Jaya Ancol is reported to be drafting a
\ndetailed proposal on the development of the four islands which
\nare about 20 minutes away from Ancol by speedboat.<\/p>\n
The recreation and property firm, which already manages
\nBidadari Island, has secured a permit from the city
\nadministration to also develop the three nearby islands, Kelor,
\nOnrust and Kayangan.<\/p>\n
The development proposal outlines that the seven-hectare
\nBidadari Island will be used as an accommodation center, while
\nthe 2-hectare Kayangan Island will be used as an amusement center
\nwhich will include cafes and restaurants.<\/p>\n
Water sport facilities will be developed on the 2,000-square
\nmeter Kayangan Island, while a recreation center will be built on
\nthe 9-hectare Onrust Island.<\/p>\n
Muhayat insisted that the islands would be developed as a
\nfamily recreation center, rejecting suggestions that it may be
\nused as a gambling den.<\/p>\n
\"It's too risky to develop a gambling business,\" he insisted.<\/p>\n
PT Pembangunan Jaya Ancol is 80 percent owned by the city
\nadministration and 20 percent owned by joint-venture firm PT
\nPembangunan Jaya, which currently manages Ancol recreation park,
\nDunia Fantasi and Sea World.<\/p>\n
Besides a family recreation center, the Paradiso islands would
\nalso be developed into an historical tourism site as several
\nheritages from the Dutch colonial are found on the islands.<\/p>\n
A fort called Mortello is located on Bidadari island while a
\nsmaller fort, part of which has already been damaged due to
\nabrasion, is located on Kelor island. (jun)<\/p>",
