Royalty fees for songs<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police have warned that action will be taken
\nagainst entertainment establishments which play songs without
\npaying royalties for their use.<\/p>\n
Chief of the city police's economic crime unit, Lt. Col.
\nAryanto Sutadi, said on Wednesday that the measure would be taken
\nas soon as police received the necessary court approval.<\/p>\n
Aryanto said that, under the law on copyrights was issued in
\n1982 and reviewed in 1987, those who use music for commercial
\npurposes could be brought to trial for failing to pay royalties.<\/p>\n
Under the existing copyright law, violators face a maximum
\npenalty of Rp 100 million (US$46,950) in fines or up to seven
\nyears in jail, he said.<\/p>\n
He added that police had received a complaint from the
\nIndonesian Creative Acts Foundation, which collects royalties
\nfrom consumers.<\/p>\n
The foundation said many businesses in the entertainment
\nindustry refused to pay royalties on music, he said.<\/p>\n
The foundation was established in 1990 as a non-profit
\nmediator between composers, both local and foreign, and
\ncommercial music users.<\/p>\n
The foundation targets any profit-making enterprise which uses
\nmusic as part of its product, including pubs, discos, hotels,
\nrestaurants and theaters.<\/p>\n
There are reportedly between 2,000 and 3,000 such businesses
