Rotary Club helps 50th harelip case<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Rotary Club Jakarta's Menteng branch celebrated
\nfunding its 50th operation on people with harelips in Mandarin
\nOriental Jakarta yesterday, pledging to continue the social
\nmission.<\/p>\n
In her speech, the club's vice president Lusiana Hasan called
\non people to bring children with harelips to the club so they
\ncould undergo surgery free of charge.<\/p>\n
\"The free service, which covers transportation, the operation
\nand medicine, is only for children under two years of age who
\ncome from poor families.\"<\/p>\n
The latest patients assisted by the club, which has offered
\nthe service since 1995, were a group of seven children on
\nTuesday, Lusiana said.<\/p>\n
She hailed the organizations which have provided material and
\nfinancial support, including non-Rotarians, state-owned Cipto
\nMangunkusumo General Hospital, privately run Bina Estetika
\nClinic, Sinar Pelangi Foundation, PT Organon Indonesia
\npharmaceutical company, and Rotarians from the Netherlands.<\/p>\n
A staffer from the Ministry of Health, Nardo Gunawan, who
\nrepresented minister Sujudi at the afternoon ceremony, gave a
\nthumbs up to Menteng Rotarians for their outstanding efforts.<\/p>\n
Nardo said the number of harelip cases in Indonesia was still
\nrelatively high and the government alone could not be relied on
\nto provide the operations.<\/p>\n
\"It's not easy to assist people with harelips. First, they
\nlive in different places and they are sometimes hidden by their
\nparents because it is thought that such a defect is a curse.\"<\/p>\n
He said the Ministry of Health always gave its full support to
\nthe club's activities.<\/p>\n
Nardo said he had no precise data about people who have
\nharelips in Indonesia but a rough estimation indicated that one
\nin every 1,000 newborns had a harelip.<\/p>\n
He said the ministry planned to conduct a thorough study and
\nproduce accurate data on harelip cases. (emf)<\/p>",
