Romana misses out on selection<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Former Indonesian Fed Cup team member Romana
\nTedjakusuma will miss the national selection tournament from Dec.
\n2 to Dec. 7 due to her inadequate ranking.<\/p>\n
Wimar Witoelar, chairman of the Indonesian Tennis
\nAssociation's National Team Body, said yesterday that Romana,
\nonce dubbed the second best player after Yayuk Basuki, dropped
\noutside the top 10 at the end of last month.<\/p>\n
Only the 10 best senior and six junior players received direct
\nentry to the tournament. World number 33 Yayuk will be exempt
\nfrom the selection.<\/p>\n
\"Unfortunately, Romana was absent from competition for so long
\nshe could not improve her ranking enough,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Romana, who was last part of the Fed Cup team with Yayuk, Liza
\nAndriyani and Wynne Prakusya in July, missed the World Tennis
\nAssociation tour for the whole of last year due to commitments at
\na Louisiana college.<\/p>\n
Liza is 15th and Wynne 12th in the national rankings but
\nqualify for the tournament as junior players.<\/p>\n
Wynne is still undergoing an overseas stint in the Czech
\nRepublic while Liza is attending the Van der Meer camp in South
\nCarolina, U.S.A.<\/p>\n
\"I was afraid that their rankings would bar them from taking
\npart in the tournament,\" Wimar said. \"I just hope that they won't
\nplay in the same group.\"<\/p>\n
Sixteen players of each sex will play round-robin matches
\nduring the tournament, with the top eight named the national team
\nbackbones for various international duties.<\/p>\n
Wimar said that unlike its male counterpart, the Indonesian
\nwomen's team will comprise nine players due to Yayuk's automatic
\nmembership of the elite group.<\/p>\n
In the men's selection tournament, veteran Bonit Wiryawan
\nsurprisingly tops the seeding list ahead of former national
\nnumber one Suwandi, winner of the preselection tournament last
\nweek.<\/p>\n
Bonit is one of the eight players joining the elite team,
\nwhich also includes Andrian Raturandang, Sebastian da Costa,
\nSulistyo Wibowo, Suhendar Dinata, Djanuar Radjab, Febi Widhiyanto
\nand Samsudin Pare.<\/p>\n
Their eight challengers seeking promotion are Suwandi,
\nTjahjono, Edy Kusdaryanto, Donny Susetyo, Edo Bawono, Abdul Kahar
\nMIM, Yusmawan Fahmi and Jefri Trihandriansyah.<\/p>\n
The draw will be conducted on Nov. 30 at the Ambhara hotel,
\nSouth Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Former national player Tintus Arianto Wibowo praised the
\ntennis body for its unbiased staging of the tournament.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian tennis body initiated the regular selection
\ntournaments last June to meet the needs of ready-for-use players
\nin international competition such as the Davis and Fed cups.<\/p>\n
The four best players in the first selection tournament,
\nBonit, Andrian, Sulistyo and Sebastian, passed their initial
\nmajor test when they beat Taiwan in September to keep Indonesia
\nin the Davis Cup Asia Oceania zone. (yan)<\/p>",
