Rohingya survivors, together with several civil society\norganisations, have filed a lawsuit against Myanmar\u2019s new President, Min\nAung Hlaing, with the Attorney General\u2019s Office in Indonesia. The\nlawsuit is based on the events that befell the Rohingya community in\n2017.<\/p>\n
The lawsuit was submitted by the Rohingya Ma\u00ecyafu\u00ecnor Collaborative\nNetwork. It concerns allegations of human rights violations committed by\nMin Aung Hlaing.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe just met this morning with the Head of Legal Information at the\nAttorney General\u2019s Office and the Director of Human Rights at the\nAttorney General\u2019s Office to submit the lawsuit on behalf of 10\nplaintiffs regarding crimes against humanity committed by the Myanmar\ngovernment. The reporting includes Mr Marzuki Darussman, former Attorney\nGeneral, and then Mr Busyro Muqoddas from PP Muhammadiyah,\u201d said Yasmin\nUllah, Director of the Rohingya Ma\u00ecyafu\u00ecnor Collaborative Network, in\nher statement on Themis Indonesia\u2019s Instagram account on Monday\n(6\/4\/2026).<\/p>\n
For context, Min Aung Hlaing is the military general who carried out\nthe coup in 2021. He has been the de facto leader of the country. He\nalso detained the elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and dissolved her\nparty.<\/p>\n
Although he already held power, Min Aung Hlaing was officially\nelected as President of Myanmar by parliament only once on 3 April 2026.\nThis election took place when he relinquished his position as supreme\ncommander.<\/p>\n
Returning to Yasmin\u2019s explanation, she recounted that the lawsuit is\nbased on her experiences in 2017. At that time, Min Aung Hlaing was the\nSupreme Commander of the Myanmar Armed Forces (Tatmadaw).<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat happened in 2017 was not something sudden; it was the result of\nyears of policies, violence, and plans to destroy my people,\u201d she\nsaid.<\/p>\n
She claimed to have lived without legal status for 16 years. During\nthat time, her life was adrift.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor 16 years, we lived without legal status. No protection, no\nfuture,\u201d she revealed.<\/p>\n
She emphasised that the alleged human rights violators against the\nRohingya must be held accountable. According to her, this effort is one\nway to resolve human rights issues concerning the Rohingya.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf there is no accountability for the Rohingya, extermination will\nspread. This is why today is so important. Resolving this universal\njurisdiction case in Indonesia is not just a legal action, but a moral\nred line,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n
She admitted to never losing hope in seeking justice, including\nexploring the possibility of prosecuting alleged human rights violators\noutside Myanmar. One of her hopes is the implementation of the new\nCriminal Code.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut of course, we do not despair; because of that, various studies\nhave been conducted, including whether it is possible, when the new\nCriminal Code is implemented, to report the perpetrators of crimes. If\nyou look at Articles 5, 6, and 7 of the new Criminal Code, universal\njurisdiction already applies based on these provisions,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
She hopes that the new Criminal Code will truly be implemented.\nBecause it contains universal principles on human rights.<\/p>\n
