Robbery suspect shot dead<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police fatally shot one of Bali's most wanted
\ncriminals here yesterday morning for his alleged role in a series
\nof bank robberies in the tourist resort island.<\/p>\n
South Jakarta Police Chief Lt. Col. SY Wenas told reporters
\nthat the suspect, identified as Herman Aljon, 31, was shot to
\ndeath after trying to escape a pre-dawn raid at his second-wife's
\nresidence in the Pondok Hijau housing complex, Ciputat, South
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
Wenas said that he was informed by the West Denpasar police
\ndetectives in Bali that Herman was suspected of being the boss of
\na group of bank robbers.<\/p>\n
Their last known robbery in Bali was the recent robbery of Rp
\n100 million (US$43,950) cash from a bank director, Wenas quoted
\nthe Denpasar police as saying.<\/p>\n
Informed by the South Jakarta police about the possible
\nwhereabouts of Herman, three Denpasar detectives led by chief
\nCapt. Syafrizal went to the address with the backup of several
\nCiputat and Kebayoran Baru police.<\/p>\n
At about midnight yesterday, the police joint team searched
\nHerman's house in North Petukangan area but the suspect was not
\nin. Hours later, the officers were informed that Herman was
\nstaying at his second-wife's home.<\/p>\n
After police had surrounded the house Herman tried to escape
\nwith a sickle in his hands, Wenas said.<\/p>\n
After firing three warning shots, one of the Bali police
\nfatally shot Herman,\" Wenas added.<\/p>\n
