Robbers shoot victim, make away with Rp 180 million<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): While police and senior city officials were
\ndiscussing plans to crack down on street crimes, an audacious
\nrobbery took place on Monday in the busy Tebet area of South
\nJakarta, during which a man was shot in the leg and Rp 180
\nmillion (US$21,176) stolen by the criminals.<\/p>\n
Tebet police Second Insp. Darmono said the incident took place
\nat around 11:00 a.m. near the Bidakara building when two
\nemployees of PT Citra Setya Sapta, Hanityo and Zurini Farida
\nHamlah, were en route to a BCA bank in Tebet.<\/p>\n
Both Hanityo and Zurini were believed to have been followed by
\nthe robbers, four men riding two RX-King motorcycles, after
\nleaving Bank Mandiri on Jl. M.T. Haryono in Tebet, where the
\nmoney was withdrawn.<\/p>\n
\"The company's money, Rp 178 million, was to be deposited at
\nBCA bank's Bidakara branch, located near the Bidakara building,\"
\nDarmono said.<\/p>\n
When the company's car, an Escudo jeep, passed Jl. Catur, near
\nthe BCA bank, the motorcyclists blocked it in front and behind.<\/p>\n
\"The motorcyclists even deliberately hit the jeep from behind
\nto make it stop,\" Darmono added.<\/p>\n
One of the robbers shot the side of the jeep four times,
\ninjuring Hanityo, 48, in his left thigh.<\/p>\n
\"The robbers took two bags from the car, one containing the Rp
\n178 million and another containing Rp 2million belonging to
\nZurini,\" Darmono said.<\/p>\n
Witnesses reported that the robbers were seen waiting outside
\nthe bank and started their motorcycles as soon as the two men got
\ninto their parked car, police said.<\/p>\n
At around the same time as the robbery, Jakarta Police chief
\nInsp. Gen. Sofjan Yacoeb held a meeting with Jakarta Military
\nCommand chief Maj. Gen. Bibit Waluyo, Jakarta deputy governor
\nAbdul Kahfi and other officials to discuss operations to crack
\ndown on street crimes.<\/p>\n
Sofjan said the operation had not yet been officially launched
\nbut its promotion throughout the force was underway.<\/p>\n
Among the initiatives to be implemented through the operation
\nis the use of plain-clothed officers deployed in \"areas prone to
\ncrime\" in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"The officers are tasked with handling crime, including taking
\nmaximum measures against criminals caught red-handed,\" Sofjan
\nsaid, referring to the shoot-on-sight order. (emf)<\/p>",
