Robbers kill bank security guard, wounds manager<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A security guard at a branch of Bank Central
\nAsia (BCA) in West Jakarta was fatally stabbed and the bank
\nmanager suffered stab wounds in an foiling armed robbery on
\nThursday afternoon.<\/p>\n
The incident at the branch on Jl. Keamanan happened at 11:25
\na.m., 10 minutes after an explosion at Hayam Wuruk Plaza shopping
\ncenter, located about 500 meters away.<\/p>\n
Witnesses and police officers in the area said a group of at
\nleast six men armed with guns and machetes and riding on three
\nmotorcycles were involved in the attempted robbery.<\/p>\n
Upon their arrival, two of the men stood on alert at a
\nnewspaper stall in front of the bank while the others, armed with
\nmachetes, a FN-type weapon and Colt-38 pistol, entered the bank.<\/p>\n
Bank security guard Syahroni, 25, immediately approached the
\nfour, according to witnesses.<\/p>\n
Before Syahroni could question them, one of the robbers
\nstabbed Syahroni with his machete in his chest, stomach and legs.<\/p>\n
Before the frightened employees and customers, the group
\ndemanded money from bank manager Hendrik Dermawan.<\/p>\n
When Hendrik refused, one of the robbers slashed Hendrik's
\nhand.<\/p>\n
Employees and bank customers panicked and screamed for help.<\/p>\n
The robbers then hastily left the bank and fled in different
\ndirections.<\/p>\n
One of the robbers, identified later as Rojak, fled on a
\nmotorcycle but collided with a becak (pedicab) near a traditional
\nmarket 200 meters from the bank.<\/p>\n
Rojak tried to run but was caught and assaulted by dozens of
\nlocal residents. They took a FN gun from his possession.<\/p>\n
Another suspect, identified as Mustakim, was apprehended by
\npolice a few minutes later. He was hiding at a spot near the
\nscene.<\/p>\n
The four remaining suspects, two of them identified as Piping
\nand Amir, are still at large.<\/p>\n
Police had difficulty collecting information from Rojak and
\nMustakim because they refused to talk. But West Jakarta Police
\ndeputy chief Maj. Hengky Kaluana said last night that the two had
\nadmitted to plotting the robbery three months ago.<\/p>\n
Hendrik and the security guard were taken to Husada Hospital
\nbut Syahroni died on the way.<\/p>\n
His body was transported to Cipto Mangunkusumo General
\nHospital for autopsy.<\/p>\n
His father, Nimin, 62, told reporters at the hospital that
\nSyahroni would be buried at the public cemetery near his house in
\nKebon Pala, East Jakarta, shortly after the autopsy was
\ncompleted.<\/p>\n
Syahroni, he said, was the eighth of his 12 children.<\/p>\n
\"The last time I met him was last night and I didn't have any
\nsignificant forewarnings that he would die soon,\" said Nimin.<\/p>\n
Hendrik remains hospitalized. Reporters were not allowed to
\nsee him or talk to his relatives.<\/p>\n
West Jakarta Police chief Lt. Col. Timur Pradopo confirmed the
\nrobbers fled empty-handed.<\/p>\n
He also dismissed speculation that the robbery and the
\nexplosion were connected.<\/p>\n
\"There's no relationship between the two incidents,\" Timur
\ninsisted.<\/p>\n
BCA, once owned by former president Soeharto's cronies and
\nrelatives, was taken over by the government last August following
\nSoeharto's resignation.<\/p>\n
One of the most recent attempted bank robberies occurred on
\nJan. 12, involving a Sierra Leonean at a branch of Bank
\nInternasional Indonesia at Plaza Indonesia shopping center in
\nCentral Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The foreigner failed in his attempt but grabbed a gun from a
\nbank security guard, shooting the bank's windows before he was
