Robberies mar

The high frequency of robberies experienced by foreign
\nresidents in Jakarta will spoil the image of the city as a
\ntourist destination. A Malaysian living in a leased house in
\nKebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, was reportedly robbed of his car
\non Oct. 5. This is only one of many such cases.<\/p>\n
The incident is counter productive to the plan to increase the
\nnumber of foreign tourist arrivals. Such crimes perhaps will have
\na graver impact in comparison with the bombing of the JW Marriott
\nHotel, for instance.<\/p>\n
Security is a very decisive factor in the effort to draw a lot
\nmore visitors. Tourists are least likely to go to places where
\nsecurity is lacking.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, tourists visiting the country have declined in
\nnumbers since 1997. Though there was some rise in 2002, this year
\nthe rate is predicted to decrease again due to bombings, which
\nbelong to the security factor.<\/p>\n
In my view, security should be tightened in Jakarta,
\nespecially in foreigners' residential areas and in places
\nfrequented by foreign tourists, without any intention to
\ndiscriminate against local citizens.<\/p>\n
