Roadsweepers bear brunt of campaign<\/p>\n
SEMARANG: Local street sweepers, mostly elderly women, are
\nfinding their yellow uniforms dangerous, especially when the
\ngreen-clad supporters of the United Development Party (PPP) rally
\nin the streets.<\/p>\n
The workers are required to wear yellow so that drivers can
\nsee them. The problem is that yellow is also the color of the
\nruling Golkar, which has been running a controversial campaign to
\npaint all public property yellow.<\/p>\n
Outraged PPP supporters have been venting their frustration on
\nthe street sweepers. Sulasmi, 56, has scarred hands as proof of
\ntheir abuse. \"They misidentified me as a Golkar supporter just
\nbecause of my uniform,\" she said.<\/p>\n
\"We are ordinary women, we don't know anything about politics.
\nI can't understand why they beat up old women like us,\" Sulasmi
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
She and her colleagues have decided not to wear their uniforms
\nwhen PPP and Indonesian Democratic Party supporters take to the
\nstreets.<\/p>\n
In Jakarta, Australian J. Acnnachal fell victim to some PPP
\nsupporters' brutality on their street rally on Thursday, Antara
\nreported. The mass beat the expatriate because he objected to
