Road maintenance budget deplored<\/p>\n
TANGERANG (JP): Nearly 1000 kilometers of the total 1,160
\nkilometers of roads in the Tangerang regency are reportedly in
\npoor condition, with the local public works office only able to
\nrepair 50 percent of the damage.<\/p>\n
\"The data also shows that 80 percent of 928 kilometers of the
\nroad is badly damaged,\" chief of the Tangerang Public Works
\noffice Muntiyno said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\"In a bid to fix the roads, we're only surviving with minimum
\nmaintenance ... avenues in other part of Tangerang must wait in
\nturn,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The local administration has allocated a Rp 13 billion budget
\nto repair the roads, a figure which Muntiyono said was \"not
\nenough\".<\/p>\n
He said many thoroughfares needed immediate attention. Roads
\nin poor condition included those along the Kresek-Jenggot route
\nand the Balaraja-Kronjo route.<\/p>\n
\"We need an average of Rp 300 million per kilometer for
\nrepairs,\" he said, adding that the administration would put roads
\nin the southern part of the regency, which connect Jakarta and
\nTangerang, as its top priority because of the heavy traffic on
\nthe routes.<\/p>\n
This reason explains why road repairs in many remote areas and
\nthe western part of the regency remain neglected.<\/p>\n
In the 2000\/2001 fiscal year, the administration has proposed
\na total of Rp 30 billion for road construction works on the North
\ncoastal lane, including the 24-kilometer-long Kresek-Kronjo and
\nKronjo-Mauk routes.<\/p>\n
\"The road is to be developed to help support economic
\ndevelopment and business activities in those areas,\" Muntiyono
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He also said that his office must deal with serious flooding
\nproblems during the rainy season.<\/p>\n
\"We are preparing to build a canal to avoid possible
\nflooding,\" he said without elaborating. (41\/edt)<\/p>",
