The Indonesian automotive market is once again stirred by rumours\nregarding the potential return of local production for the legendary\nAmerican brand, Ford. RMA Indonesia, the current authorised distributor\nfor Ford, is reportedly exploring various strategic possibilities to\nstrengthen its market penetration, including the option of\nlocalisation.<\/p>\n
This step is considered crucial given that competition in the light\ncommercial vehicle and premium sport utility vehicle (SUV) segments\u2014two\nlines where Ford relies on the Ranger and Everest\u2014is becoming\nincreasingly intense with the arrival of new challengers. Government\nincentives for domestically assembled vehicles also serve as a\nsignificant draw for manufacturers.<\/p>\n
Roelof Lamberts, Regional Director of RMA Indonesia, stated that the\ncompany is currently conducting an in-depth study regarding the\nimplementation of Completely Knocked Down (CKD) facilities in Indonesia.\nCKD facilities serve as an important bridge for a brand to increase\nprice competitiveness through import tax efficiencies and the\nutilisation of local content (TKDN).<\/p>\n
However, the decision to establish an independent assembly line\nrequires careful calculation regarding long-term sales volume\nprojections and domestic market stability. \u201cWe will provide an update to\nour media colleagues as soon as there are further developments that we\ncan share,\u201d Lamberts said when contacted recently.<\/p>\n
Previously, Lamberts mentioned that RMA and Ford are investigating\nthe possibility of car assembly in Indonesia, though discussions are\nstill in the early stages. He noted that several parties are involved in\ndiscussions to assess the feasibility and potential realisation of Ford\nvehicle assembly within the country. In addition to establishing their\nown factory, Lamberts also stated that they are not ruling out the\npossibility of using assembly facilities owned by other companies.<\/p>\n
Currently, Ford\u2019s presence in Indonesia relies on robust models\nimported as Completely Built Up (CBU) units.
