Riverbank face relocation<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The government was planning to resettle people who
\nwere currently residing along riverbank areas in Jakarta,
\nMinister for Environment Nabiel Makarim said on Monday.<\/p>\n
He said that the people would be relocated to places close to
\ntheir current homes.<\/p>\n
But it is not clear when the plan can be carried out.<\/p>\n
\"We are still in the process of finding appropriate sites.
\nPerhaps to the land which are currently under the Indonesian Bank
\nRestructuring Agency's control,\" he said, adding that
\nnegotiations were still underway.<\/p>\n
City governor Sutiyoso has pledged to clear riverbanks of
\nsquatters and stated that they would not receive any
\ncompensation.<\/p>\n
He accused them of illegally occupying the land even though
\nsome residents said that they had built the buildings with the
\napproval of local officers and paid land and building taxes.--JP<\/p>",
