Asian group<\/p>\n<p>DHAKA (Reuters): Regional rivalries and the military takeover<br>\nin Pakistan have virtually frozen the South Asian Association for<br>\nRegional Cooperation (SAARC), which is in deep crisis, experts<br>\ntold a seminar in Bangladesh on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>A summit of its leaders scheduled for Kathmandu last year was<br>\nput off in view of tensions between nuclear-capable rivals India<br>\nand Pakistan and the organization was now in limbo, they said.<\/p>\n<p>\"In the wake of tit-for-tat nuclear tests by India and<br>\nPakistan followed by the Kargil conflict and then a military<br>\ntakeover in Pakistan, the activities of the SAARC have been<br>\nfrozen,\" said Dr Iftekharuzzaman, a Bangladeshi expert in<br>\nregional politics.<\/p>\n<p>\"The 15-year old association now faces its deepest crisis,\"<br>\nsaid Iftekharuzzaman, who heads the Freedom Foundation in Dhaka,<br>\na private research organization.<\/p>\n<p>SAARC comprises Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives,<br>\nNepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.<\/p>",
