Telecommunications observer Heru Sutadi believes that the risk-based\napproach implemented by Indonesia in efforts to protect children in\ndigital spaces has the potential to be studied and serve as an example\nfor other countries.<\/p>\n
He made this assessment in response to appreciation shown by US\nrepresentatives regarding Indonesia\u2019s digital child protection policies\nduring a meeting with the Minister of Communication and Digital,\nMeutanya Hafid, in Jakarta on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe appreciation from the United States shows that Indonesia is\nbeginning to possess interesting policy experience for other nations to\nstudy. One such approach is the risk-based method, which does not treat\nall digital platforms identically, but instead assesses the level of\nrisk to children,\u201d Heru told ANTARA on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis could serve as a lesson for the US that child protection cannot\nrely solely on parental education or user choice,\u201d Heru added.<\/p>\n
Heru considers the risk-based approach to be more realistic because\nnot all platforms pose the same level of danger to children. High-risk\nplatforms, he noted, require stricter restrictions, whereas lower-risk\nservices can be treated differently.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis also makes the policy more proportional and allows children to\ncontinue benefiting from technology for education, creativity, and\ncommunication,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
This approach also provides space for innovation while maintaining\nchild safety as a priority, rather than implementing a total ban on\nsocial media.<\/p>\n
However, Heru warned that the effectiveness of the risk-based\napproach depends heavily on the government\u2019s ability to accurately\nassess risk levels and ensure that platforms implement the established\nrestrictions.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe key lies in the government\u2019s ability to assess risk accurately\nand ensure that platforms truly execute the set restrictions. We must\nnot be satisfied simply because we have rules that appear advanced,\u201d he\nremarked.<\/p>\n
Joy Sakurai, the Charg\u00e9 d\u2019Affaires ad interim of the US Embassy to\nIndonesia, stated during the meeting with Minister Meutya Hafid that\nthey wish to study Indonesia\u2019s experience in implementing child\nprotection in digital spaces.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to gain Indonesia\u2019s perspective on online child safety\nbecause US First Lady Melania Trump has an initiative underway that is\nvery similar to what you are doing,\u201d said Sakurai.<\/p>\n
He also expressed a desire to bring the best practices from\nIndonesia\u2019s policy regarding social media restrictions for children to\nbe studied in his country. Sakurai praised Indonesia\u2019s approach of not\nimplementing a total ban, but instead providing gradual restrictions\nbased on age with specific permissions and protections.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis aligns with the culture of tolerance in Indonesia. If access\nwere removed entirely, it would be very difficult to manage.
