He made the statement in response to appreciation expressed by US\nrepresentatives regarding Indonesia\u2019s online child protection policies\nduring a meeting with Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs\nMeutya Hafid in Jakarta on Tuesday (September 8).<\/p>\n
\u201cThe recognition from the United States shows that Indonesia is\ndeveloping a policy track record that other countries find worth\nstudying. One key element is its risk-based approach,\u201d Heru told ANTARA\non Wednesday.<\/p>\n
He noted that this strategy makes Indonesia\u2019s policy stand out\nbecause the government does not apply a blanket rule to every digital\nplatform, but rather focuses on the level of risk to children.<\/p>\n
Heru, the executive director of the Indonesia Information and\nCommunication Technology (ICT) Institute, added that Indonesia is also\nworking to integrate several key aspects of child protection in the\ndigital space, ranging from platform accountability and age verification\nto access restrictions and government oversight.<\/p>\n
In his view, a risk-based approach is more realistic because not all\nplatforms pose the same level of risk to children. High-risk platforms,\nhe said, require stricter restrictions, while those with lower risk can\nbe treated differently.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis also makes policy more proportional, allowing children to\ncontinue benefiting from technology for education, creativity, and\ncommunication,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n
This approach also leaves room for innovation while keeping child\nsafety a priority, rather than imposing an outright ban on social media\nplatforms.<\/p>\n
However, Heru cautioned that the effectiveness of this approach\ndepends heavily on the government\u2019s ability to accurately assess risk\nlevels and ensure platforms comply with established restrictions.<\/p>\n
He noted that Indonesia must also remain open to learning from the\nUS, particularly regarding technology, law enforcement, and digital\nsecurity systems.<\/p>\n
Ultimately, he said, the success of online child protection policies\nwill depend on consistent implementation and the government\u2019s ability to\nmeasure their actual impact on children\u2019s safety.<\/p>\n
During the meeting with Minister Meutya, Charg\u00e9 d\u2019Affaires ad interim\nat the US Embassy in Jakarta Joy Sakurai expressed interest in learning\nfrom Indonesia\u2019s experience in digital child protection. She noted that\nUS First Lady Melania Trump is working on a similar initiative.<\/p>\n
Sakurai praised Indonesia\u2019s approach as it enforces tiered, age-based\nrestrictions paired with specific permissions and safeguards instead of\nan outright ban.<\/p>\n
