RI's problems to affect SE Asia<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE (AFP): Political unrest in Indonesia will have a
\nmajor security impact on Southeast Asia, Singapore Deputy Prime
\nMinister Lee Hsien Loong predicted at the weekend.<\/p>\n
Lee said in a speech late on Saturday that while Singapore's
\neconomy had recovered from the financial crisis that struck the
\nregion in 1997, it was still facing challenges.<\/p>\n
\"One cause for worry is developments in Indonesia,\" he said,
\nciting Jakarta's battle against separatist rebels and the need to
\nrestore order in the Maluku islands wracked by a bloody Muslim-
\nChristian conflict.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's neighbors have been closely watching how Jakarta
\nis dealing with the separatist rebellions in the provinces of
\nIrian Jaya and Aceh as well as the sectarian strife in the fabled
\nSpice Islands -- now known as the Malukus -- because of its
\nregional security implications.<\/p>\n
ASEAN Secretary-General Rodolfo Severino said at an Asian
\nsecurity forum last month in the Thai capital Bangkok that ASEAN
\nshould take the political events in Indonesia \"seriously\".<\/p>",
