The unrest in Noida, in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh,\nwas triggered by surging living costs amid the ongoing war between the\nUnited States-Israel and Iran. In addition to inflationary pressures,\nworkers demanded wage hikes following the implementation of a 35% salary\nincrease for workers in the neighbouring state.<\/p>\n
Noida itself is a major industrial area housing thousands of factory\nunits in the region. Sporadic protests began emerging after news spread\nof the neighbouring state of Haryana\u2019s recent decision to significantly\nraise workers\u2019 wages.<\/p>\n
The trigger for the outbreak of mass violence was reportedly a rumour\nclaiming that similar demands submitted by Noida workers had been flatly\nrejected by authorities.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat bird\u2019s news quickly ignited the crowd\u2019s emotions, who felt\nunfairly treated amid the economic crisis engulfing the area,\u201d reported\nRT on Wednesday (15\/4\/2026).<\/p>\n
The angry mob then began burning vehicles and throwing stones at\nvarious points in the city, ultimately forcing police to intervene\nrepressively to disperse the crowd. Television footage showed thousands\nof protesters on a long march, chanting struggle slogans under the tight\nsurveillance of anti-riot personnel.<\/p>\n
Local reports indicated that more than 150 vehicles suffered severe\ndamage and over 50 others were burned by the mob as police officers were\npelted with stones. At least 30 people were reported injured in the\nbloody clashes that paralysed industrial activities.<\/p>\n
Local police confirmed that more than 300 people had been arrested,\nmany of whom were not industrial workers. Currently, around 50 social\nmedia accounts are under intensive investigation for allegedly being the\nmasterminds behind the spread of disinformation that sparked the\nriots.<\/p>\n
The total losses suffered by industrial units in the area are\nestimated to reach US$321 million, equivalent to Rp5.1 trillion. Some\nreports also suggest possible political interference behind the\nprotests, although economic grievances and wage disparities remain the\nprimary factors fuelling workers\u2019 dissatisfaction.<\/p>\n
The situation is highly sensitive given that legislative elections in\nUttar Pradesh are scheduled for early next year. In response to the\nescalation, the state government finally raised the minimum wage to\nUS$32 after holding emergency meetings with worker representatives.<\/p>\n
Although the situation in the industrial sector has begun to calm,\nsocial tensions appear not to have fully subsided in the area.
