RI's changing demographics: pros and cons<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia has undergone sweeping demographic
\nchanges over the past 25 years thanks to its highly successful
\nfamily planning program, population experts say.<\/p>\n
Declining birth and mortality rates, coupled with rising life
\nexpectancies and migration have changed the population mix in
\nIndonesia, something that policy makers should take into account
\nwhile plotting the nation's development.<\/p>\n
The Demography Research and Development Center of the
\nUniversity of Indonesia will hold a seminar on April 18 to
\ndiscuss the problems and challenges facing Indonesia in what
\nexperts describe as a demographic revolution.<\/p>\n
\"The major question that needs to be urgently addressed is how
\nthe national development should be carried out in accordance with
\nthe demographic changes,\" Aris Ananta of the demographic center
\ntold reporters yesterday.<\/p>\n
The meeting, which will feature demographers and senior
\nscientists, will be held as part of the celebration of the
\ncenter's 30th anniversary. The center falls under the School of
\nEconomics at the state university.<\/p>\n
Dwiantini J. Fergus, one of the demographers tipped to address
\nthe meeting, said the seminar will also discuss the conditions of
\nlabor market and productivity in relation to the composition of
\nthe population in the year 2005 when the demographic transition
