Riri Riza plans to return film award<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: In response to blasphemy allegations made by the World
\nHindu Youth Organization (WHYO) to Garin Nugroho's movie Opera
\nJawa (Requiem from Java), young film director Riri Riza said he
\nwanted to return the award he received from Bali International
\nFilm Festival, organized by WYHO.<\/p>\n
Garin's movie is an interpretation of the Ramayana epic.<\/p>\n
\"I'll make an official statement to the press as soon as
\npossible,\" Riri said on the sidelines of the opening of Jakarta
\nInternational Film Festival (Jiffest) on Dec. 9.<\/p>\n
He said that his gesture aimed to discourage moves that
\nstifled the freedom of expression.<\/p>\n
Riri added that several filmmakers received an award from the
\nfestival. He was considering contacting filmmakers to discuss the
\npossibility of their acting in unison.<\/p>\n
Recently, a number of artists have indicated growing concern
\nabout fundamentalist actions that suppress cultural expression,
\nlike the recent demand from the Islam Defenders Front (FPI) that
\nCP Biennale Arts Festival dismantle Agus Suwage's work, which
\ndisplayed nude photographs taken by Davy Linggar.<\/p>\n
Previously, WYHO protested Iwan Fals, accusing the singer of
\ncommitting blasphemy against the Hindu religion due, it said, to
\nIwan's depiction of God on the sleeve of his record. --JP<\/p>",
