        "content": "<p>Riot rocks Tegal<\/p>\n<p>TEGAL, Central Java (JP): At least 40 shops, a gas station and<br>\nnumerous vehicles were burned when about 15,000 people were<br>\ninvolved in a riot with police and military personnel in the<br>\nCentral Java town of Tegal yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The riot occurred when the demonstrators, who had assembled in<br>\nthe mayoralty office compound to demand the sacking of Mayor<br>\nZakir, were involved in a tussle with security personnel after<br>\nbeing expelled from the compound.<\/p>\n<p>Tegal Military District commander Col. Amirul Lanaeni declined<br>\nto comment on the causes of the riot, while Tegal police chief<br>\nLt. Col. Tedjo Sularso only said that prior to the outbreak<br>\ndemonstrators were already throwing stones at security officers.<\/p>\n<p>Sularso admitted that the demonstrators became angry when they<br>\nwere refused access to meet the mayoralty council to deliver<br>\ntheir demand.<\/p>\n<p>Sari Ali, an eyewitness, said that at least 80 were injured in<br>\nthe riot, seven seriously.
