Riot mars village head election<\/p>\n
PURWOKERTO, Central Java: Election for a village head in the
\nPatikraja district, Banyumas regency was canceled Thursday,
\nleading to a riot in which hundreds of people destroyed polling
\nbooths and ballots.<\/p>\n
Crowds in the Kedung Randu village also vandalized the home of
\nformer village head Djumiran, 47, one of the candidates.<\/p>\n
Banyumas Police Chief Lt.Col. Johnny H. Hutauruk told The
\nJakarta Post that people went amok because supporters of
\nDjumiran, who failed to pass required tests, boycotted the
\nelection.<\/p>\n
Voters did not reach the required two thirds of 2,373
\nvillagers and the election was canceled.<\/p>\n
According to plans the election will be held next month.
\n\"That's if the situation improves,\" Banyumas administration
\nspokesman, Didi Rudwianto, said. (45)<\/p>",
