Rights trial to start on March 14<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The first hearing of an ad hoc human rights trial
\nwill commence on March 14, despite the absence of regulations on
\nwitness protection, rehabilitation, and compensation for the
\nvictims of human rights abuses, a judge said on Friday.<\/p>\n
The trial was previously feared to be facing a delay, pending
\nthe issuance of the regulations.<\/p>\n
Judge Andi Samsan Nganro said that the court would conduct two
\nhearings on the same day, presenting two defendants -- former
\nEast Timor Governor Abilio Jose Soares and former East Timor
\nPolice Chief Brig. Gen. Timbul Silaen -- respectively.<\/p>\n
The two have been charged with genocide and crimes against
\nhumanity, which carries the death penalty.<\/p>\n
"We are ready to conduct the hearings," Andi said after
\nattending a meeting at the Supreme Court on Friday.<\/p>\n
A four-member panel of judges, presided over by Judge Marni
\nEmy Mustafa, would try Abilio's case, while Judge Andi would lead
\nthe hearing of Timbul.<\/p>\n
The third trial case would likely involve five defendants,
\nincluding former Covalima regent Herman Sedyono. -- JP<\/p>",
