Rights committee to probe rape<\/p>\n
DILI: The National Commission on Human Rights plans to
\ninvestigate allegations that military personnel raped a young
\nwoman in November last year, a local activist said here
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
"The investigators are due here for a two-day visit after the
\nIdul Fitri holiday, possibly Feb. 11th," head of the East Timor
\ncommittee branch Alex Rifialy told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
The committee has already received depositions by the 23 year-
\nold illiterate farmer from the Ermera district, Alex said. The
\ncase caused an uproar in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
He said the team of Clementino dos Reis Amaral, Marzuki
\nDarusman, Sugiri and Soetandyo Wignjosubroto would not only
\ninvestigate the alleged rape, but also probe the murder of chief
\ncorporal Alfredo dos Santos outside Dili cathedral last year
\nprior to a Christmas Eve service.<\/p>\n
The investigation follows closely on the heels of statements
\nby Bishop of East Timor Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo here Wednesday
\nabout continued abuses of human rights in Indonesia's youngest
\nprovince.<\/p>\n
In addition to the new cases, the rights committee would
\ninvestigate an old case concerning the shooting of Thomas da
\nCosta, 35, in Betano village, Same district, Alex said.<\/p>\n
The authorities have denied the reports on the rape of the
