Rights body to reopen past cases<\/p>\n
JAYAPURA, Papua: A member of the National Commission for Human
\nRights (Komnas HAM), Enny Soeprapto, said on Tuesday past human
\nrights cases would be reopened and prosecuted and processed in
\naccordance with current laws.<\/p>\n
She said the rights body had decided to reopen investigations
\ninto a number of incidents, including the bloody takeover of the
\nIndonesian Democratic Party headquarters on July 27, 1996, the
\nSemanggi I and II killings, the Trisakti shootings, the Tanjung
\nPriok shootings, the Kedung Ngombo project, the killing of labor
\nactivist Marsinah and the murder of Papua independence leader
\nTheys Hiyo Eluay.<\/p>\n
\"The reopening of these cases was decided during a special
\nplenary meeting in October in Jakarta,\" Enny was quoted by Antara
\nas saying in Jayapura, Papua, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
She appealed to the public to assist Komnas HAM in
\ninvestigating human rights abuses and prosecuting them in
\naccordance with the law.<\/p>\n
Enny acknowledged that people's had lost faith in the
\ncommission because of its failure to resolve numerous human
\nrights abuse cases satisfactorily, which, according to her, was
\npartly due to government intervention.<\/p>\n
\"In the future, Komnas HAM will work more independently in
