Rights body studies NZ<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Two members of the National Commission on Human
\nRights have just completed a comparative study on New Zealand's
\nhuman rights.<\/p>\n
Clementino Dos Reis Amaral and Bambang W. Suharto found that,
\nunlike Indonesia's government-appointed commission which has 25
\nmembers, New Zealand's has six commissioners supported by 90
\nstaff.<\/p>\n
Amaral said they also had found that New Zealanders lodged
\ncomplaints via modern telecommunications, while Indonesians had
\nto meet the commission's staff in person.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian commission was financed by the State
\nSecretariat, while New Zealand's was funded by its Justice
\nDepartment, Amaral said as reported by Antara.<\/p>\n
\"This shows that Indonesia is not the only country where the
\ngovernment financially supports its human rights body,\" he said.
\n\"The National Commission on Human Rights, therefore, can be
\ntrusted as an independent body like in New Zealand despite
\ngovernment financial support.\"<\/p>\n
He said that members of New Zealand's human rights body were
\npaid similar salaries to its legislators, ministers and even
\nprime minister.<\/p>",
