Rights body slammed over Flores violence<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Activists assisting victims of last year's police
\nshooting in Manggarai regency on Flores island have criticized
\nthe National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) for \"not
\nbeing serious\" about the case.<\/p>\n
\"We are extremely disappointed over the slow response of
\nKomnas HAM to this case .... The commission has given a lot of
\nexcuses when asked about its responsibility,\" said a statement
\nfrom the Advocacy Team for the Manggarai People on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Komnas HAM has launched an investigation into the March 10,
\n2004, incident that left at least five people dead and 28 others
\nwounded. However, no suspects have been named in the attack.<\/p>\n
Police officers opened fire on about 400 villagers who stormed
\nthe Manggarai Police station in Ruteng to demand the release of
\nseven villagers being detained there.<\/p>\n
According to a preliminary investigation by the police,
\nofficers opened fire only after the villagers attacked them.<\/p>\n
Activists have blamed the incident on Manggarai Regent Antony
\nBagur, who barred locals from farming in a disputed protected
\nforest and ordered the arrest of seven owners of a coffee
