Ride-Hailing, Delivery Firms Push Back Against Compulsory Eid\nBonus<\/p>\n
Jakarta. The Indonesia Digital Mobility and Delivery Association\n(Modantara) has urged the government not to require online taxi and\ncourier platforms to pay a mandatory Ramadan bonus to their\ndriver-partners this year, arguing that such payments should remain\nvoluntary.<\/p>\n
The association said the holiday bonus \u2014 intended to help drivers\ncelebrate Eid al-Fitr after the fasting month \u2014 should be based on each\ncompany\u2019s financial capacity, not imposed uniformly across all\nplatforms.<\/p>\n
According to Modantara, the Ramadan bonus is \u201cnot a corporate\nobligation, but a goodwill initiative to support the welfare of\ndriver-partners.\u201d<\/p>\n
The group warned that mandating a standardized bonus scheme for all\nonline taxi and delivery operators could place additional strain on\nindustry players, whose business scale and financial conditions vary\nsignificantly.<\/p>\n
\u201cA uniform holiday bonus mechanism would create expectations among\ndriver-partners and could potentially trigger unrest,\u201d the association\nsaid in a statement. \u201cWe believe the government will act wisely this\nyear in implementing policies related to the holiday bonus, taking into\naccount that each platform has different financial capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n
Modantara added that several of its members have independently\nprovided holiday bonuses in line with their respective financial\npositions, while also considering the long-term sustainability of the\nsector.<\/p>\n
The association also questioned why the government appeared to single\nout digital mobility and delivery platforms, while not imposing similar\nobligations on other informal-sector businesses.<\/p>\n
\u201cPolicy-making should not be discriminatory or overly burdensome to\nindustry players, and must take into account the long-term impact on the\nindustry and the broader investment climate,\u201d said Agung Yudha,\nexecutive director of the association.<\/p>\n
Earlier, the Ministry of Manpower indicated that online taxi and\ndelivery operators would be expected to provide holiday bonuses to\ndriver-partners, similar to last year.<\/p>\n
Under Indonesian law, state institutions and private companies\noperating in the formal sector are required to pay a religious holiday\nallowance equivalent to one month\u2019s salary once a year. Employees with\nat least one year of service are entitled to receive the full\namount.<\/p>\n
Most companies subject to the rule disburse the allowance uniformly\nin mid-Ramadan to simplify financial management.<\/p>\n
Ride-hailing and delivery drivers \u2014 who number in the millions across\nIndonesia \u2014 are generally classified as informal workers due to their\nflexible contractual arrangements and commission-based income\nstructures. Their eligibility for mandatory holiday allowances therefore\nremains a contentious regulatory issue.<\/p>\n
