RI would welcome Japanese textiles<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Japan would be better off relocating its textile
\nmanufacturing activities to Indonesia rather than invoking
\nprotectionist measures against imports, Chairman of the National
\nAgency for Export Development Rudy Lengkong said yesterday.<\/p>\n
\"If Japan's textile industry cannot compete anymore with
\ndeveloping countries, why doesn't it relocate the facilities to
\ndeveloping countries like Indonesia,\" Lengkong told reporters
\nafter addressing a business luncheon hosted by the Indonesian-
\nNetherlands Association.<\/p>\n
Lengkong noted that Japan's textile industry might lose
\ncompetitiveness due to the sharp appreciation of the yen against
\nother major currencies.<\/p>\n
Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI)
\nlaunched a probe late last month into certain Asian textile
\nimports, which may result in Japan's first curbing of imported
\nindustrial goods.<\/p>\n
The move was made at the request of the Japan Spinners
\nAssociation and the Japan Cotton and Stable Fiber Weavers
\nAssociation. The two associations claim they have been damaged by
\na flood of imported Chinese, South Korean and Indonesian thread
\nas well as Chinese and Indonesian cloth, both of which are used
\nto manufacture shirts and other garments.<\/p>\n
Japan's Ambassador Taizo Watanabe said here on Tuesday that
\nthe MITI will soon conduct another study into textile imports
\nfrom Indonesia and hold talks with the parties concerned. Any
\ndecision on the matter, he said, will be made after the study is
\ncompleted.<\/p>\n
\"If Japan considers a reduction in imports, it contradicts its
\nown policy of importing more products from developing countries
\nto reduce its huge trade surplus,\" Lengkong said.<\/p>\n
Japan imported $189.9 million of textiles from Indonesia last
\nyear, as compared to $1.66 billion from China and $586.1 million
\nfrom South Korea. (rid)<\/p>",
