RI workers employed as prostitutes<\/p>\n
SURABAYA: Some 5,000 Indonesian women migrant workers in
\nMalaysia need immediate help as they have been entrapped by a
\nsyndicate to work as prostitutes, a government official working
\nin Malaysia said here on Friday.<\/p>\n
Makdum Tahir, the Indonesian consul general in Tawao, a city
\nin the eastern Malaysian state of Sabah, said the women had been
\nforced to work as prostitutes for almost one year.<\/p>\n
Makdum, who came to Surabaya to accompany 16 migrant workers
\nwho managed to escape the syndicate, said the network was
\noperating behind labor import companies.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian government's efforts to uncover women
\ntrafficking had not yielded significant results, he said.<\/p>\n
For some inexplicable reason, the Malaysian Police had failed
\nto provide sufficient assistance to expose the syndicate, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
"We tried to approach the Malaysian police but received no
\nresponse. It was very disappointing," he said.<\/p>\n
He estimated that 90 percent of female Indonesian migrant
\nworkers forced into prostitution by the syndicate were from
