RI workers 'can't compete' overseas<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Indonesia is unable to compete with neighboring
\ncountries, including the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, to
\nfill about 6,000 job opportunities, mostly domestic helpers and
\nother positions, abroad annually, an official said.<\/p>\n
Secretary-general of the Ministry of Manpower and
\nTransmigration Joko Sidik Pramono said on Wednesday the inability
\nto compete was ironic as at the same time the number of employed
\nat home reached at least 38 million.<\/p>\n
Joko said that the inability to fill the job vacancies was
\ncaused mainly by the lack of effective job training in the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
Joko said this condition was worsened by the fact that 70
\npercent of the Indonesian workforce consisted of elementary
\nschool graduates lacking skills.<\/p>\n
There have been no clear measures taken to resolve the
\nunemployment problem, including how to improve their skills.<\/p>\n
Besides domestic positions, there is also a large demand for
\nnurses, but again Indonesia is far from meeting the basic
