RI vessel rammed off Australia<\/p>\n
CANBERRA (AP): An Indonesian fishing boat was rammed
\naccidentally and sunk yesterday by an Australian navy patrol boat
\nafter being caught fishing illegally in Australia's northern
\nwaters.<\/p>\n
Five Indonesian crewmen and two members of a navy boarding
\nparty were rescued unharmed from the water by the HMAS Cessnock,
\na navy spokesman said.<\/p>\n
He said two Indonesian fishing boats had been intercepted and
\nsuccessfully boarded Tuesday after they were caught fishing
\nillegally within the Australian Fishing Zone.<\/p>\n
\"At around 1:30 a.m. on July 22, Cessnock was leading the two
\nfishing boats to Darwin,\" the spokesman said.<\/p>\n
\"But because her minimum speed was greater than the top speed
\nof the foreign fishing vessels, she needed to reverse course to
\ncircle around the boats every two hours or so.<\/p>\n
\"During one of the maneuvers, the trailing fishing boat
\napparently swerved off course and crossed the bow of Cessnock. A
\ncollision was unavoidable despite evasive action taken by
\nCessnock.\"<\/p>\n
Wednesday's incident follows criticism of the defense force
\nfor being too lenient on Indonesian fishing vessels after another
\nintruder led HMAS Cessnock on a 500 kilometer chase earlier this
\nmonth.<\/p>\n
Despite shots fired across the bow and the two vessels
\ncolliding without damage, the fishing boat escaped into
\nIndonesian waters.<\/p>",
