RI-U.S. diplomatic relations<\/p>\n

With regard to the suggestion made by some community leaders
\nthat Indonesia should suspend diplomatic relations with the
\nUnited States, I consider that stance to be unwise and very
\nsubjective; a suggestion made emotionally and rather
\nthoughtlessly.<\/p>\n
As we all know, the U.S. exercises great control over the
\nworld. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has extended
\nfinancial assistance to Indonesia to help the country out of its
\nmonetary crisis. The U.S. is a big buyer of Indonesia's
\ncommodities.<\/p>\n
This country is important to Indonesia, which is now
\nintensifying its export drive to acquire greater foreign exchange
\nearnings. Many American tourists have visited Indonesia and if
\nIndonesia cuts its ties with the U.S., of course, many hotels and
\ntourist attractions will suffer, causing the country's
\nunemployment rate to rise. Some U.S. investments in Indonesia
\nwould be disrupted and various business activities in this
\ncountry would be hampered.<\/p>\n
Some organizations have held protest rallies to insist that
\nthe government break diplomatic ties with the U.S. These people
\nobviously do not understand well the situation of their own
\ncountry and, perhaps, they may not feel the direct impact of
\nsevered diplomatic ties.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, such demonstrations are really meaningless
\nas they only make other people restless, miserable and worried.
\nThis certainly poses a serious threat to security and development
\nin Indonesia.<\/p>\n
