RI, U.S. armies hold joint exercise<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Fifty Indonesian Army engineers have been involved in
\na month-long joint exercise with nine special U.S. army personnel
\nin Bogor, West Java, Antara reported yesterday.<\/p>\n
The exercise, which began on Feb. 9 and is scheduled to end
\ntomorrow, has been testing demolition capabilities including the
\ndestruction of tanks\/armored personnel carriers, plantations,
\nbuildings and obstacles, the news agency quoted a statement from
\nthe Indonesian Armed Forces (ABRI) information center as saying.<\/p>\n
The exercise also covered defensive acts such as creating tank
\nobstacles with explosives, destroying bridges and halting convoy
\nand troop movements, it said.<\/p>\n
Maj. Gen. Suadi Marasabessi, the Army chief of staff's
\nassistant for operations, and Brig. Gen. Koenwirhadi, director of
\nthe Indonesian Army's engineers division, inspected the personnel
\nand equipment involved in the exercise yesterday.<\/p>\n
The exercise, code-named Balance Iron 98-7, involved personnel
\nfrom the engineers division and the Army Strategic Reserves
\nCommand (Kostrad), the Presidential Security Guard, Jakarta
\nMilitary Command's engineers division, the Army's Combat Exercise
\nCenter (Puslatpur), seven men from the U.S. Army Special Forces
\nand two others from the U.S. Marine Corps.<\/p>",
