RI urges KL to respect rights in crackdown<\/p>\n
MALAYSIA: Indonesia on Saturday urged Malaysia to ensure
\nthere are no human rights abuses when it begins a massive
\noperation next week to arrest and deport hundreds of thousands
\nof illegal immigrants.<\/p>\n
Visiting Indonesian manpower minister Fahmi Idris said Jakarta
\naccepted Malaysia's Monday deadline to end an amnesty for illegal
\nimmigrants, mostly Indonesians, to return home without penalty.<\/p>\n
But Malaysia must ensure it follows humanitarian principles in
\ncarrying out the crackdown, he was quoted as saying by Bernama
\nnews agency after meeting Home Affairs Minister Azmi Khalid.<\/p>\n
Azmi assured Idris that the government would ensure that the
\nwelfare of the immigrants were taken care of.<\/p>\n
"The very reason we are sending them back is because we want
\nthem to come back legally. This is very, very humanitarian," he
\nsaid. "We just want to legalize you because if you are illegal,
\nyou are being exploited. So what more humanitarian approach can
\nanybody think of?" -- AFP<\/p>",
