RI urges APEC plan on new financing<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia has urged members of the Asia Pacific
\nEconomic Cooperation (APEC) forum to formulate a new financing
\nscheme to support small and medium-scale businesses looking for
\nsustainable economic growth in the region.<\/p>\n
"I put forth the proposal at the APEC meeting of ministers and
\nsenior officials in Osaka, Japan, last week," Minister of Trade
\nTunky Ariwibowo told reporters after meeting with President
\nSoeharto at the Bina Graha presidential office yesterday.<\/p>\n
Tunky, together with Minister\/State Secretary Moerdiono
\nyesterday reported to the President on the results of the Osaka
\nmeeting held on Oct. 22 and Oct. 23.<\/p>\n
During the APEC meeting, Tunky said, Indonesia called for the
\nregion's developed countries to provide more aid for small and
\nmedium-sized businesses to enable them to deal with the possible
\nrelocation of industrial plants which no longer have a
\ncompetitive edge in developed countries.<\/p>\n
Promotion<\/p>\n
He said that APEC's members should also support the promotion
\nof the use of high-quality components produced by small and
\nmedium-scale companies of developing countries for the global
\nmachinery industry.<\/p>\n
"I would say that once developing countries are capable of
\nproducing components of high quality they will have better access
\nto the world's machinery industry," he said.<\/p>\n
Tunky, who was the head of the Indonesian delegation in the
\nAPEC meeting in Osaka, said he also suggested that the advanced
\nand developing countries promote cooperation in the venture
\ncapital business.<\/p>\n
He said capital markets and financial institutions should have
\nspecial programs to help small and medium-sized companies develop
\ntheir businesses.<\/p>\n
The two-day meeting ended with a commitment to promote studies
\non regional interdependence, more open trade and deregulation for
\nsmall businesses, high attention on environment ethics, human
\nresources development and technology cooperation.<\/p>\n
Agreements reached at the Osaka conference will be reported at
\nthe second APEC informal summit in Bogor, south of here, on Nov.
