RI urged to boost security in Strait<\/p>\n
INDONESIA: Japan's counterterrorism envoy asked the Indonesian
\ngovernment to boost security in the Malacca Strait, a strategic
\nshipping lane where pirates regularly launch attacks on vessels.<\/p>\n
U.S. officials have also raised concerns that international
\nterrorists might stage attacks on ships using the channel to
\ndisrupt world trade. The waterway is bordered by Malaysia,
\nIndonesia and Singapore.<\/p>\n
Last month, pirates attacked a Japanese-registered tugboat in
\nthe strait, and kidnapped two Japanese sailors who were later
\nreleased unharmed.<\/p>\n
Akio Shirota, Japan's counterterrorism envoy, met with
\nIndonesian ministers on Thursday to seek greater cooperation in
\nsecuring the strait, according to a statement on Friday by the
\nJapanese Embassy in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"Shirota reiterated the request to the Indonesian government
\nto strengthen their security measures in the strait,\" said the
\nstatement. It gave no more details.<\/p>\n
Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore currently jointly patrol the
\nwaterway, which is plied by more than 50,000 vessels each year.
