        "content": "<p>RI to sign maritime accord<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: The Australian Federal Government plans to sign a<br>\nmaritime boundaries agreement with Indonesia in Perth, Western<br>\nAustralia, on March 14, 1997.<\/p>\n<p>Antara reported here earlier this week the Australian<br>\ngovernment would be represented on the occasion by Foreign<br>\nMinister Alexander Downer and Indonesia by Minister of Foreign<br>\nAffairs Ali Alatas.<\/p>\n<p>The two countries have held negotiations on maritime<br>\nboundaries for more than 25 years, the news agency reported.<\/p>\n<p>The sixth informal meeting in Sydney, September 11-12, 1996,<br>\ndealt only with former boundaries between the two neighboring<br>\ncountries.<\/p>\n<p>The maritime boundaries agreed upon at the meeting covered the<br>\nExclusive Economic Zone and the continental shelf between Java<br>\nIsland and Christmas Island, the Exclusive Economic Zone in the<br>\nArafura Sea and the Timor Sea.  This was in lieu of a memorandum<br>\nof understanding reached in 1981 on temporary fishery boundaries<br>\nbetween the two countries in the Arafura Sea and Timor Sea and<br>\nthe continental shelf in the Timor Sea south of Sumba and Sawu<br>\nislands.<\/p>\n<p>The outcome of the informal meeting has been submitted to the<br>\ngovernments of the respective countries.  Meanwhile, the<br>\nAustralian cabinet has been discussing the result of the meeting<br>\nand the accord is scheduled to be signed in March 1997 during a<br>\nvisit by Foreign Minister Ali Alatas.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement will be the first international agreement signed<br>\nby Australian Prime Minister John Howard.
