RI to send birth control experts to other developing countries<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia will sell its experience in family
\nplanning abroad, State Minister of Population\/Chairman of the
\nNational Family Planning Board Haryono Suyono said yesterday.<\/p>\n
He said Indonesia planned to send its experts to other
\ndeveloping countries to help them promote family planning and
\nexchange knowledge on population control.<\/p>\n
Indonesia will start sending experts this year because of a
\ngreat demand from countries which have participated in family
\nplanning training in Indonesia, he said after opening an
\ninternational course on family planning.<\/p>\n
Countries which have asked Indonesia for family planning
\ntraining include Vietnam, Cambodia, Tanzania and Ethiopia, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Haryono said the planned overseas training program would be
\nthe first. So far, training and internships for family planning
\nprofessionals from other developing countries have been held
\nhere.<\/p>\n
Indonesia was becoming a popular place for other developing
\ncountries to learn family planning, Haryono said.<\/p>\n
\"The most common request is training for a group of people
\nfrom the same region, such as hospital officials or village
\nchiefs. Later they can practice, together, what they have learned
\nhere.<\/p>\n
\"It has proven to be effective, in Bangladesh for example,\"
\nHaryono commented, adding that such training was getting more
\ndifficult to provide because an ever-increasing budget was
\nrequired.<\/p>\n
Indonesia has received international acclaim for its success
\nin curbing its population growth. It has limited the population
\ngrowth rate to between 1.2 and 1.6 percent per annum, with the
\naverage number of children per family now between two and three.
\nIn many other developing countries, population continues to grow
\nby four percent or more with the number of children around six to
\nseven per family.<\/p>\n
Two teams of Indonesian family planning experts will visit
\nIran and Turkey late of this month and other teams will go to
\nZimbabwe and Tunisia in April, to see how those countries manage
\ntheir programs.<\/p>\n
\"By learning from other countries, we will be ready to give
\nanswers and examples in training courses that we organize,\" said
\nHaryono.<\/p>\n
The ongoing training program has 34 participants from
\ncountries including Bhutan, Cambodia, Eritrea, Ethiopia, India,
\nLaos, Maldives, Morocco, Myanmar, the Philippines and
