RI to sell food, medicine to Iraq<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Industry and Trade, Tunky Ariwibowo,
\nand Iraq's Minister of Trade, Mohammed Mehdi Saleh, yesterday
\nagreed that Indonesia could sell food and medicine to Iraq.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesia has the opportunity to sell food and medicine to
\nIraq according to the Oil for Food Arrangement policy set by the
\nUnited Nations (UN),\" Tunky said after a two-day joint commission
\nsession on economic, scientific and technical cooperation.<\/p>\n
The UN has allowed Iraq to sell US$4 billion worth of oil each
\nyear to purchase food and medicine lifting its embargo on Iraqi
\nexports because of its invasion of Kuwait in August 1990.<\/p>\n
\"Both parties have agreed to increase bilateral trade to at
\nleast to the same level as before the UN embargo was imposed,\"
\nsaid Tunky.<\/p>\n
Minister Saleh said his country would use $1.35 billion from
\noil sales to purchase wheat, rice and sugar.<\/p>\n
Tunky said the Iraqi minister conveyed a message from
\nPresident Saddam Hussein saying that Indonesia has priority to
\nsupply food and medicines as scheduled in the Oil for Food
\nArrangement.<\/p>\n
Tunky said both parties have agreed to hold trade missions and
\nparticipate in international trade and industry exhibitions,
\nincluding the Resource Indonesia and Islamic Trade fair in
\nJakarta in October 1996 and the Baghdad International Fair in
\nNovember.<\/p>\n
Both parties have also discussed long-term cooperation in
\npetrochemical, textile, heavy equipment and power generation,
\nengineering, agricultural, forestry and pharmaceutical sectors.<\/p>\n
They will further discuss the possibility of oil exploration
\nin both countries. The Iraqi minister also invited Indonesian
\nfirms to cooperate in aircraft maintenance.<\/p>\n
State-owned PT Indofarma has offered to sell medicines to
\nIraq.<\/p>\n
Saleh invited Indonesian companies to visit Iraq. If they sell
\ngoods in Iraq, the Iraqi government will order its central bank
