        "content": "<p>RI to sell food, medicine to Iraq<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Industry and Trade, Tunky Ariwibowo,<br>\nand Iraq's Minister of Trade, Mohammed Mehdi Saleh, yesterday<br>\nagreed that Indonesia could sell food and medicine to Iraq.<\/p>\n<p>\"Indonesia has the opportunity to sell food and medicine to<br>\nIraq according to the Oil for Food Arrangement policy set by the<br>\nUnited Nations (UN),\" Tunky said after a two-day joint commission<br>\nsession on economic, scientific and technical cooperation.<\/p>\n<p>The UN has allowed Iraq to sell US$4 billion worth of oil each<br>\nyear to purchase food and medicine lifting its embargo on Iraqi<br>\nexports because of its invasion of Kuwait in August 1990.<\/p>\n<p>\"Both parties have agreed to increase bilateral trade to at<br>\nleast to the same level as before the UN embargo was imposed,\"<br>\nsaid Tunky.<\/p>\n<p>Minister Saleh said his country would use $1.35 billion from<br>\noil sales to purchase wheat, rice and sugar.<\/p>\n<p>Tunky said the Iraqi minister conveyed a message from<br>\nPresident Saddam Hussein saying that Indonesia has priority to<br>\nsupply food and medicines as scheduled in the Oil for Food<br>\nArrangement.<\/p>\n<p>Tunky said both parties have agreed to hold trade missions and<br>\nparticipate in international trade and industry exhibitions,<br>\nincluding the Resource Indonesia and Islamic Trade fair in<br>\nJakarta in October 1996 and the Baghdad International Fair in<br>\nNovember.<\/p>\n<p>Both parties have also discussed long-term cooperation in<br>\npetrochemical, textile, heavy equipment and power generation,<br>\nengineering, agricultural, forestry and pharmaceutical sectors.<\/p>\n<p>They will further discuss the possibility of oil exploration<br>\nin both countries. The Iraqi minister also invited Indonesian<br>\nfirms to cooperate in aircraft maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>State-owned PT Indofarma has offered to sell medicines to<br>\nIraq.<\/p>\n<p>Saleh invited Indonesian companies to visit Iraq. If they sell<br>\ngoods in Iraq, the Iraqi government will order its central bank<br>\nto provide letters of credit.(kod)<\/p>",
