        "content": "<p>RI to operate regional mobile satellite<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia will offer regional mobile satellite<br>\ntelecommunication services in cooperation with other countries<br>\nwithin the Asia-Pacific region, an executive said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We are discussing this with companies from several countries<br>\nin the region and the final decision on partnership will<br>\nhopefully be established in August,&quot; the president of PT Pasifik<br>\nSatelit Nusantara (PSN), Adi Rahman Adiwoso, told reporters after<br>\ndelivering his presentation at a telecommunications business<br>\nseminar yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>He said that after the establishment of the cooperation, the<br>\ncompanies involved will immediately order the construction of a<br>\ncommunications satellite from one of the three satellite<br>\nproducers in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>According to Adiwoso, three companies in the world can produce<br>\nsatellites with a large coverage capacity; Hughes Aircraft<br>\nCompany, G.E. Martin Maritta Astro and Loral, all of which are<br>\nU.S. firms.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the idea of developing mobile satellite<br>\ntelecommunications in the region started early last year.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The government has agreed to the idea and the planned<br>\nsatellite will likely be placed at 80.5, 118, 123.5 or 135<br>\ndegrees in geo-stationary orbit,&quot; he said, adding that the<br>\nsatellite will be able to serve about one million subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the cost of the project, estimated at between<br>\nUS$800 and US$900 million, will be shared among the members in<br>\nthe partnership.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;A contract for the satellite construction will likely be<br>\nsigned in December,&quot; Adiwoso said, &quot;The construction is expected<br>\nto be completed within three years.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>PSN, operating in satellite management, is 40 percent owned by<br>\nTelkom, 30 percent by PT Electrindo Nusantara, 10 percent by<br>\nAdiwoso and another PSN executive, Iskandar Alisjahbana, 10<br>\npercent by Hughes of the United States and 10 percent by Telesat<br>\nof Canada.(icn)<\/p>",
