RI to host workshop on forestry conservation<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia will host a debate next month on
\nforest conservation programs in Asia, bringing together business
\nexecutives and environmental activists as well as community
\nleaders and government officials.<\/p>\n
The March 2-8 meeting, billed as a public hearing, will be
\nhosted by the Indonesian Biodiversity Foundation in cooperation
\nwith the World Commission on Forests and Sustainable Development.<\/p>\n
Foundation chairman Emil Salim said yesterday that the hearing
\nwill look at the conflicts between various stakeholder groups and
\ndevelopment of the region's forest resources.<\/p>\n
Emil, a former environmental minister, said the hearing will
\nprovide a forum for transparent discussion of politically
\nsensitive issues that are constraining efforts to develop and
\nconserve the region's forests.<\/p>\n
The primary objectives of the hearing will be to work towards
\nconsensus between various stakeholder groups on target areas for
\npolicy and institutional reform, he said. \"It is also to examine
\nsocioeconomic and environmental trade-offs between various policy
\noptions.\"<\/p>\n
The results of the meeting and similar hearings held in other
\nparts of the world will be incorporated into Global Forests, a
\nbook expected to be published in 1997, he said.<\/p>\n
Some 25 commission members, including co-chairmen Emil Salim
\nof Indonesia and Ola Ullsten of Sweden, 45 panel members and 100
\nparticipants are expected to take part. (imn)<\/p>",
