RI to host WBC annual convention<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The World Boxing Council (WBC) confirmed on
\nThursday that Jakarta would host the 39th Annual World Convention
\nin November.<\/p>\n
Chairman of WBC Finance Committee Chandru G. Lalwani told a
\nmedia briefing that he was ready to prepare accommodation for
\nmore than 400 representatives from 161 countries and nine
\nfederations across the world for the Nov. 11 to Nov. 17 event.<\/p>\n
\"It will take US$675,000 to stage the convention excluding
\nWBC's expenses. I will set up a committee for the preparation
\nshortly. We will figure out how to source funds,\" he said.<\/p>\n
According to a letter faxed by WBC president Jose Sulaiman on
\nTuesday, the council would like to keep one full day of the
\nconvention to discuss medical issues.<\/p>\n
\"The instructions given by Sulaiman have stressed the
\nimportance of medical aspects which would be a priority on our
\nagenda for our convention in Indonesia, committing all WBC
\ndoctors to join efforts so medical items were defined and
\nclarified in November, for new measures to be enforced,\" Lalwani
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He also said that WBC had set an item on the agenda to improve
\nthe performance of ring officials.<\/p>\n
\"The WBC would begin a campaign to achieve an extensive
\nattendance at our convention of referees and judges from all over
\nthe world,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Sulaiman also said in his fax he hoped the President of
\nIndonesia could officially open the convention.<\/p>\n
\"We have received support from President Abdurrahman Wahid.
\nBut we don't know whether he could fulfill our request to open
\nthe event,\" said Lalwani, adding that the National Police chief
\nand the Minister of National Education had agreed to serve as
\nadvisors.<\/p>\n
Boxing promoter Boy Bolang, who also attended the media
\nbriefing, expressed enthusiasm over the meeting.<\/p>\n
He said the Indonesian professional boxing community could
\nlearn from foreign counterparts' experiences, particularly in
\ndealing with safety and medical treatment.<\/p>\n
\"This is the right time for the Indonesian professional boxing
\ncommunity to speed up our progress. We have seen two Indonesian
\nboxers die after their bouts within one month. Boxer' safety and
\nmedical treatment were key issues for Indonesian boxers,
\nmanagers, trainers and promoters,\" said Boy, who promoted former
\nsuper flyweight boxer Ellyas Pical to win his OPBF (Oriental
\nPacific Boxing Federation) title in 1984.<\/p>\n
Boy also said that Indonesia could also study how to manage
\nprofessional bouts on TV. Currently RCTI and Indosiar are
\nbroadcasting live boxing matches.<\/p>\n
\"I could say that 60 percent of boxers performing on TV don't
\nmeet the criteria of professional boxers. Only 30 percent
\nfulfilled the requirements while the remaining 10 percent were
\nreally good boxers.\"<\/p>\n
\"There are many boxers who only train for three months before
\nperforming on TV. They could be easily knocked out by any amateur
\nboxer. The amateur boxers are more skillful now,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Boy also hoped that visitors could enlighten the Indonesian
\nboxing fans to appreciate a professional bout.<\/p>\n
\"The general public don't understand how to appreciate a bout.
\nThey only like to see how people punched back after being hit
\nfirst by another and the bloodshed that accompanied the fight.
\nBut that kind of bout is not worth watching.\" (ivy)<\/p>",
