RI to host meeting on Strait of Malacca<\/p>\n
INDONESIA: The Indonesian government and International Maritime
\nOrganization (IMO) will host a two-day meeting on security in the
\nStrait of Malacca at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in South Jakarta,
\nstarting on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The meeting, entitled \"Jakarta Meeting on the Strait of
\nMalacca and Singapore: Enhancing Safety, Security and
\nEnvironmental Protection\" will be used to discuss the Strait's
\nmonitoring plan and cooperation to ensure safe travel along the
\nStrait, with government officials, non-governmental
\norganizations, academics and representatives of shipping
\ncompanies.<\/p>\n
Antara news agency reported that a monitoring scheme called
\nthe Marine Electronic Highway (MEH) would be launched on the last
\nday of the meeting on Thursday. The project involves the three
\nlittoral states -- Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia -- along
\nwith the IMO, the World Bank and a group of shipping companies.<\/p>\n
The MEH, which will monitor every ship, will be headquartered
\non Batam island just south of Singapore. Under the scheme, the
\nships are also required to help protect the environment by
\ncurbing pollution produced by ships.<\/p>\n
The navies of the littoral states will also discuss their
\njoint efforts for security in the Straits. -- JP<\/p>",
